Charles Holdefer to be at Knoxville Library
Knoxville native Charles Holdefer will be reading from his new novel “Don’t Look at Me,” at the Knoxville Public Library Thursday, February 9 at 6:00 p.m. Holdefer attended Melcher-Dallas and Knoxville schools, and later the University of Iowa. He now lives in Brussels, Belgium. Holdefer returns to Knoxville every year to visit family and to teach at the Iowa Summer Writing Festival.

Police Calls for Service Increases in Knoxville
Knoxville Police Chief Aaron Fuller tells KNIA/KRLS News that his department handled over 9,000 calls in 2022, which was down compared to the year before. Fuller noted his department had an 18 percent increase in calls for service, such as funeral escorts, car unlocks, welfare checks, extra patrol and motorist assists, etc.

Knoxville Girls Soccer Fundraiser in Pella Tuesday
The Knoxville girls varsity soccer team will have a new coach in 2023 as Bethany Johnson takes over for Matt Ritchhart. The team will be doing a fundraiser at Pella Applebee’s for Knoxville Girls Soccer. It goes from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday, February 7. If you order one of 5 menu items off the list, Applebee’s will donate 50% of your bill to the girls team.

Pella Fire Chief Excited with Department’s Progress in First Year
Pella Fire Chief Randy Bogaard has been leading the Pella Fire Department for a just over a year. Bogaard has been adjusting over the past year to some of the administrative duties on top of still being in the service. In his first year, Bogaard oversaw a major call last year in a downtown Pella fire, and saw a new engine purchased by the City of Pella come into service — a project led by his predecessor Doug Van Gorkom. Indianola Library SOUP-er Bowl Tomorrow
The Indianola Public Library is continuing the SOUP-er Bowl tomorrow, a friendly competition between local businesses and organizations to provide a hot soup meal to the community. Adult Services Librarian Jacy West tells KNIA News each Friday until February 10th, different groups will have soups available at the Indianola Public Library for the community to eat and vote on who made the best soup, with space available for promotional material next to the soup.

Underground Railroad Discussion Today for Afternoon Adventures
Indianola Parks and Rec is hosting the next installment of their Afternoon Adventures Speaker Series this afternoon, featuring the Underground Railroad movements in southwest Iowa, including details about activities in Madison and Warren County. Kathy Kester with Indianola Parks and Rec tells KNIA News Madison County Historical Society President Linda Griffith Smith and former Warren County Historical Society President Deb Taylor will host a program about the Underground Railroad movements, and the punishments for helping your fellow man that included prison, a $10,000 bounty, and your life. The Afternoon Adventures Speaker Series will be from 2-3pm at the Indianola Activity Center.
