About Incident

Shortly after 9 PM Tuesday night, officers responded to the McDonald’s at 343 Broad Street for a report of a vehicle driven off with a three-year-old child inside.

Police said they met with the child’s parent and the information was broadcast out.

According to police, the vehicle was found a short while later abandoned near the Omni Hotel in downtown Providence, where security said the suspect fled on foot.

The child was inside the vehicle, reportedly unharmed.

Rescue responded to the Omni Hotel to check on the welfare of the child and Family Services and DCYF were notified.

Suspect Tracked Down and Arrested

A Providence Police Sergeant reported later seeing a man fitting the suspect's description boarding a RIPTA bus on Charles Street -- with a hoverboard.

Police conducted a motor vehicle stop of the bus, at which time police say the suspect attempted to flee; he was located and detained by police.

The suspect, Osvaldo Vazquez, age 50, is being held for court where he is facing charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
