Indianola Chamber Dinner Next Week
The Indianola Chamber of Commerce annual dinner and awards ceremony is one week away, the chamber’s first in-person annual dinner since 2019. Chamber President and CEO Amanda Zwanziger tells KNIA News the speaker this year will be author Eric Recker with the theme of Win The Now, and is all about taking advantage of the unique opportunities afforded in Indianola, and using the momentum that has been building for years to help Indianola reach its potential.

Indianola Library SOUP-er Bowl Tomorrow
The Indianola Public Library is continuing the SOUP-er Bowl tomorrow, a friendly competition between local businesses and organizations to provide a hot soup meal to the community. Adult Services Librarian Jacy West tells KNIA News each Friday until February 10th, different groups will have soups available at the Indianola Public Library for the community to eat and vote on who made the best soup, with space available for promotional material next to the soup.

Underground Railroad Discussion Today for Afternoon Adventures
Indianola Parks and Rec is hosting the next installment of their Afternoon Adventures Speaker Series this afternoon, featuring the Underground Railroad movements in southwest Iowa, including details about activities in Madison and Warren County. Kathy Kester with Indianola Parks and Rec tells KNIA News Madison County Historical Society President Linda Griffith Smith and former Warren County Historical Society President Deb Taylor will host a program about the Underground Railroad movements, and the punishments for helping your fellow man that included prison, a $10,000 bounty, and your life. The Afternoon Adventures Speaker Series will be from 2-3pm at the Indianola Activity Center.

Warren County Conservation Hosting Scavenger Hunt
Warren County Conservation is hosting a scavenger hunt next week, the annual Hidden Heart-Hunt Adventure. Naturalist Kelsey Longnecker tells KNIA News kids are invited to put their puzzle-solving skills to the test, as there will be 10 hearts both inside and outside the nature center, and there will be clues as to the location that involve local animal exhibits. Longnecker also said there will be a craft at the end of the hunt involving pieces from the hearts. The Hidden Heart-Hunt Adventure will be February 11th beginning at 10am at the Annett Nature Center. For registration information, click below.

Knoxville Girls Soccer Fundraiser in Pella Tuesday
The Knoxville girls varsity soccer team will have a new coach in 2023 as Bethany Johnson takes over for Matt Ritchhart. The team will be doing a fundraiser at Pella Applebee’s for Knoxville Girls Soccer. It goes from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday, February 7. If you order one of 5 menu items off the list, Applebee’s will donate 50% of your bill to the girls team.

George Washington Carver Day Tomorrow
Tomorrow is the first annual George Washington Carver Day in the State of Iowa. Governor Kim Reynolds declared in June that every February 1st would celebrate the famed humanitarian, who spent time at Simpson college after being rejected from other institutions in the midwest because of the color of his skin.

The Simpson College athletics teams have a busy weekend ahead, with women’s and men’s track and field, wrestling, gymnastics, and basketball all in action on Saturday. Indianola Girls Wrestling State Qualifiers Making History
Two Indianola girls wrestlers qualified to the state meet last week, as Summer Wolff and Lanie Frericks will travel to Xtream Arena in Iowa City starting tomorrow to represent the Indians. The Girls High School Athletic Union announced last year that girls wrestling would be a sanctioned sport, making this meet the first sanctioned girls state meet in Iowa history.

Indianola High School Jazz Performs at State Contest
Indianola High School Jazz Band students performed at the Iowa High School Music Association State Jazz Band Contest at Norwalk High School last week. Jazz I received a Division I rating, their 10th consecutive Division I rating, while Jazz 2 received a Division II rating. The bands were judged by a panel of three judges and received feedback after their performances.
