ODOT, PBOT, and Clackamas County all say they're ready for Wednesday's snowstorm despite staffing and other challenges.
“This is our first real test of the season here we are! It’s not even the first of December yet,” said Don Hamilton, spokesperson for ODOT.
He said they're preparing all available resources for Wednesday's snowstorm.
“We’ve got crews everywhere, ready to go. We haven’t had to use many of our resources yet so far this year, certainly, we’ve got plenty of supplies of salt, de-icer, and the sand, we haven’t had to use them yet in the Portland area so we’re ready with all of that too," Hamilton said.
The agency has 132 vacancies among road maintenance crews, who operate the snow plows and other winter treatments.
But Hamilton says unless we get a very severe, prolonged winter storm, they're ready to keep the roads clear.
"If we get hit by a bad storm we go quickly to 12-hour shifts, but if a storm continues for days and days on end, then we’ve got to make sure they’re rested. We’ve got to make sure our crews get the rest they need, that’s the most important thing we can do,” he said.
Local transportation agencies say they're ready too.
“Our crews have been ready for days and we have enough sand, de-icing materials, and plows ready to roll to address any winter weather conditions,” said Kimberly Webb, Public Information Officer for Clackamas County.
“We’re focused on areas at high elevation particularly, it’s not just the West Hills, people think of Northwest and Southwest hills of being in high elevation, but Mt. Tabor, Rocky butte, the Mt. Scott area, outer East County,” said Dylan Rivera, spokesperson for the Portland Bureau of Transportation.
But all these agencies told us that Tuesday's rain made it almost impossible for crews to put down de-icing agents ahead of the storm.
“You don’t want to put de-icer down when it’s gonna rain, it just washes off the road at that point and that’s a waste of taxpayer money,” Hamilton said.
All the agencies we spoke with say it's important for drivers to use extreme caution while driving through the Gorge or mountain passes Wednesday, regardless of how quickly they clear the roads.
