Two Spartans Post Double-Figures as Women's Basketball Falls 74-45 to Vanderbilt on Tuesday Night in Tennessee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite two Spartans posting double-figures, USC Upstate fell 74-45 in a mid-week game against the Commodores of Vanderbilt.  

The first quarter kicked off with a three-pointer from Talia Roldan right out of the gate. Vanderbilt responded with two made free throws and a jumper to regain the lead, but it was short lived as Nyla Walker scored a jumper off the fast break. Upstate reached seven points before Vanderbilt went on a six-point run to make the game 13-7. Rebekah Gordon and Isabella Geraci were able to close the gap to two points before the Commodores sunk a three-pointer before the quarter ended. The Spartans went 55.56% for field goals and 100% for three-pointers in the first quarter.  

Going into the second quarter trailing 16-11, Upstate knew there was work to be done. Vanderbilt was able to push their lead to nine points before AC Markham scored a jumper in the paint. Geraci and Gordon were able to help narrow the gap back to six points before Vanderbilt went on a 10-point run to make the game 33-17. Roldan earned the last points of the second quarter for Upstate with a three-pointer, but the Commodores were able to make the game 37-20 going into the half.  

During the third quarter, Isabella Geraci earned seven of her of her 13 points trying to chip away at Vanderbilt's lead. Her two made free-throws helped Upstate go 100% for free-throws in the third quarter. Gordon, Walker, and Roldan also contributed two-points apiece to help Upstate go into the final 10 minutes with the score 59-33 in favor of the home team.  

Coming out of the break, Vanderbilt extended its lead by another six points before Geraci scored a jumper off the fast break. Cali Levine scored five points in the fourth quarter, going 2-2 for free-throws, while Roldan contributed two points and Walker three. Upstate posted 12 points in the fourth quarter to finish the game. The visiting Spartans fell 74-45 after four quarters.

First Quarter 

  • Talia Roldan scores a three-pointer to get Upstate on the board first.  

  • Marnelle Garraud made two free throws before Sacha Washington made a jumper to take the lead from Upstate. 

  • A defensive rebound from Isabella Geraci gave Nyla Walker the ability to score a jumper off the fastbreak to give Upstate the lead.  

  • With under three to go in the first quarter, Vanderbilt extended its lead by six points, making the game 13-7. 

  • A jumper from Rebekah Gordon and a layup from Geraci cut the Commodores lead down to two. 

  • Vanderbilt sunk one final three-pointer before the end of the quarter to make the game 16-11. 

Second Quarter 

  • Vanderbilt pushed its lead to nine with 7:45 left in the half. 

  • Jumpers from AC Markham and Geraci were successful in helping to keep the game within reach for the Spartans as the score read 23-15. 

  • Rebekah Gordon made a layup to put the game within six points.  

  • The Commodores went on an 11-point run before Talia Roldan sunk a three-pointer to halt the run with under two minutes left. 

  • Vanderbilt tallied four more points to force Upstate to trail 37-20 going into half. 

Third Quarter 

  • Vanderbilt hit a three to start the third quarter to which Upstate sunk one of their own courtesy of Isabella Geraci

  • The Spartans and the Commodores exchanged points as Nyla Walker, Talia Roldan, and Geraci contributed two points apiece.  

  • Geraci went 2-2 from the free throw line to make the game 47-31 with just over four minutes left in the third quarter. 

  • The Commodores went on a nine-point run to make the game 59-33 going into the final ten minutes.  

Fourth Quarter 

  • Upstate found itself on defense to start the fourth quarter as Vanderbilt went on a seven-point run to make the game 66-33. 

  • Geraci put the Commodores run to a half with a jumper in the paint off a fast break.  

  • Amauri Williams scored a layup to try to get Vanderbilt's offense moving again but Talia Roldan posted a layup for Upstate to keep the Spartans momentum going. 

  • With just over four left, Cali Levine sunk a three-pointer to make the game 70-40. 

  • A three-pointer from Nyla Walker and two made free-throws from Cali Levine would finish off the Spartans' scoring for the night as the game finished 74-45. 
      

Notable 

  • Isabella Geraci also was in double-figures for scoring for the third time this season (13); this was her second game in a row scoring in double-figures. 

  • Geraci not only went 100% from the free throw line but also went 100% for three pointers against Vanderbilt.  

  • Nyla Walker also went 100% for three-pointers tonight while also going 3-4 for field goals.  

  • Talia Roldan had her first game as a Spartan where she scored double-figures with a season-high 10 points.  

  • Sofia Allen earned her first rebounds of the season with the two she had tonight.
