North Montgomery High School athletes are going to have upgraded locker rooms beginning the 2023-24 school year.
The North Montgomery School Board approved the $2.66 million project Monday with a unanimous vote.
Business Manager Jim McBee explained the project was a continuation of the school renovation that included instructional areas, resource center and commons area. He also explained the corporation has been saving for the locker room project.
“The locker rooms by the gym and the two in the swimming pool area are the same as they were when the school opened in 1971,” McBee said. “We have been able to set aside money for several years in our Rainy Day Fund to pay for this project without hurting our reserve balance.”
The three locker rooms that enter into the gymnasium will be turned into four locker rooms. There will be varsity locker rooms for boys and girls varsity teams plus two physical education locker rooms. The swimming pool locker rooms will receive upgrades.
Board member Jarrod Zachary said the project was more than just locker room upgrades.
“I know we are spending a lot of money, but I see it as an investment into our students and the community,” Zachary said.
Work on the locker rooms is expected to begin in the spring and will be completed before the start of the next school year.
The board also approved a contract to replace the roof on the middle school in the amount of $1.85 million with Associated Roofing Professionals.
Foursquare Solutions was awarded a $33,000 contract to oversee the roofing project and in particular a problem with the insulation that was found during renovation completed a few years ago.
A new dual credit course for the middle school was approved. An Introduction to Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources will be taught beginning this year’s final trimester.
Sommer Elementary was the highlighted school at the meeting. Fifth grade student Harper Allen was the honorary school board member.
In other business, the board approved:
• Resignations from Michele Threlkeld, middle school English; Robin Tague, middle school aide; Dick Peterman, grounds; and Andrew Walters, district transportation.
• The hiring of Latosha Copeland, middle school language arts.
