Dyondre Dominguez leads four scorers in double digits, UMass men’s basketball wins fourth straight

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Massachusetts men’s basketball team won its fourth straight game as it picked up a 73-67 win on the road over USF behind five double figure scorers. The Minutemen (5-1) were led by 15 points from Dyondre Dominguez and a double-double for Wildens Leveque.

Dominguez helped provide a spark after off the bench after the Minutemen went over four minutes without a field goal following a T.J. Weeks Jr. 3-pointer to open the game. UMass put together a 13-0 run after the scoring drought, highlighted by a pair of fast break layups for Dominguez as part of 21 fast break points.

Defensively, UMass held USF without a point for four-plus minutes during the scoring run and held the Bulls to 29-percent from the field in the opening half. USF answered UMass’ run with one of their own, an 8-0 stretch to give the home team back the lead with 6:38 left to go in the first.

UMass closed out the half strongly, with Dominguez scoring seven points in a span of 1:44 of game time, taking a 40-25 lead into the halftime break. The Minutemen shot just over 48-percent in the half and finished the night just over 45-percent from the field.

RJ Luis added 14 points and six rebounds off the bench and shot 2-of-3 from deep, including a triple to halt a USF scoring run after the Bulls pulled within six at 47-41 with 11:35 remaining. UMass extended its lead to as many as 14 points with 4:11 remaining before a quick 7-0 USF scoring run brought them back within striking distance. Luis once again ended the scoring run, this time on a putback layup to stretch the lead back to nine with just over a minute left.

Leveque’s double-double featured 11 points and 10 rebounds while the big man knocked down his first two career 3-pointers on the night. Weeks Jr. finished with 13 points while Matt Cross added 12. Noah Fernandes dished out a season-high nine assists with Rahsool Diggins recording five assists and just one turnover on the night.

The Minutemen conclude their stretch of five straight games away from home on Friday night with a 7 p.m. tip-off at Harvard on ESPN+.
