Vail Valley Charitable Fund: The family that you choose
Up on our ranch, a lot of conversations happen with friends in their cars and me on the road or in the field. This was no different. Late in the summer, my good friend Dagmar shouted at me as I wrestled with an irrigation sprinkler about joining the Vail Valley Charitable Fund.

Sustainable Vail: Resolve to think green in the new year
Each year, millions of people make New Year’s resolutions to get organized, learn a new skill, exercise more, lose weight, be healthier and so much more. In 2023, there are small changes we can all make to contribute to a healthier environment. We can all resolve to think a little more about our habits and how little shifts can make a big difference when impacting the world around us.
Carnes: Edwards a non-binary town?
Perhaps it’s just me, but I feel some are beginning to take this whole “Identifying versus Being” thingy a tad too far. The first is subjective while the other is objective, yet both are considered truth in respective circles. “But Richard, how does this apply to Edwards?”...
Letter: Bravo, Jerry Stevens, on a job well done
Congratulations to Jerry Stevens on his well-earned retirement as pickleball director for Vail Recreation District. What an enormous difference Jerry has made in the Vail pickleball community and beyond. He poured his heart and soul into the town’s local program, and from its humble beginnings, Vail Pickleball is now thriving and continuing to grow by leaps and bounds. So many of us who live in the Vail Valley, as well as countless visiting tourists, directly owe our enjoyment of playing pickleball to Jerry’s infectious enthusiasm and excellent teaching of the sport.
Avon first and second graders receive the surprise of two wheels
Avon Elementary School’s gym was filled with joyous screams on Thursday morning when 99 first and second graders were surprised with a bike (and helmet) of their own. “With the high cost of housing and food, purchasing a new bike is out of the reach of many of our families,” said Dana Harrison, Avon Elementary’s principal. “For many students, it will be the first new bike they have ever had.”

Robbins: Why I wear a suit to court
You may have noticed that the Vail Valley is a casual place. Even in the finest establishments, jeans are common, ski boots, even after dark, still clunk beneath fine linen tablecloths. It’s part of what we love about this place. I have long observed that if you spy someone...
School Views: The science behind the snow day
Every winter I’m asked, “Who decides when we have a snow day?” or “Can I join the snow day team?” I certainly understand the interest. It’s an exclusive group of four highly trained and qualified individuals that spend countless hours on almost everything other than meteorology. Together, we practice quasi-science to determine the fate of the district when snowy weather occurs. While I jest, I certainly don’t mean to make light of how we make our decisions.

On Tuesday, Rep. Joe Neguse expressed “deep concerns” over the mismanagement of post offices in Western Colorado in a letter to Jason McMahill, the district manager for the Colorado-Wyoming United States Postal Service district. The letter states that the Colorado-Wyoming district’s mismanagement has led to “urgent concerns about...
The new VSON Buena Vista clinic offers convenient orthopaedic services for patients in Chaffee County
We primarily think of Vail-Summit Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery as a lifeline for patients in the I-70 resort corridor, but the pioneering healthcare organization has always worked to provide outreach to mountain communities far from Metro Denver. This month, VSON established a more permanent arrangement in Buena Vista to offer patients...
Eagle County will probably see wolves reintroduced to its remote areas, and that worries ranchers
Wolves are probably coming to Eagle County. Area ranchers are nervous about it. Proposition 114 passed narrowly in the 2020 general election. The proposition requires the state to create a plan to reintroduce gray wolves to the state. Colorado Parks and Wildlife is now in the final stages of creating a draft plan to implement the new law.

Letter: Let’s plant more bamboo for pandas
The pandas are going extinct from the world, and pandas are no longer being seen often in the wilderness. I once went to the zoo in Denver and asked if there were pandas and they said that there were no pandas because they weren’t in the forest. So they did not have pandas to show to the people. It was a few days later when I discovered the pandas were going extinct. I knew why the pandas were going extinct and I found out that somebody is stopping the pandas from finding new bamboo.
Sustainability Tip: Make 2023 a positive year for our earth
As we welcome 2023, many of us are making resolutions for self-improvement and growth, and a few may have already been abandoned, but it is not too late to consider making some climate action resolutions to improve both your life and the planet. If we all focus on simple lifestyle changes and action items, we can make 2023 a positive year for our earth, ourselves and our community. Here are some of those resolutions our sustainability team is making this year, and we hope they inspire some of your own.

It was a challenging week for the Vail Ski Patrol last week when we closed out our holiday season with a series of unfortunate events that took a toll on the staff. When this happens, we get together, debrief events and support one another. In a much-appreciated show of local...
Eagle County’s emergency operations plan coordinates local, county, state, federal responses
During the 2020 Grizzly Creek Fire, Eagle County Commissioner Kathy Chandler-Henry was talking to someone from outside the county who was impressed by the trust and communication between local agencies. “It’s hard to build relationships during an emergency,” Chandler-Henry was told. That trust is built when emergency alarms...
