While most court documents remain sealed in the Jabari Parson's murder investigation, a preliminary court hearing revealed new information about the death of Mary Blackwell.
On Tuesday, new details were revealed about the August 2022 death of 55-year-old Mary Blackwell. According to prosecutors, Blackwell was found in her burning Plattsmouth home with a knife in her chest.
Jabari Parsons, 18, is charged with first-degree murder in Blackwell's death. He's also facing two other felonies, including first-degree arson.
Prosecutors in Cass County, Neb. said Parsons methodically planned to kill Blackwell, including getting a ride to an area near her home, and packing a backpack of supplies.
"There was motive," said Cass County assistant attorney Chris Perrone. "There was a plan. He carried out that plan."
An investigator testified that video surveillance linked Parsons' clothing to the clothing of the killer and photos of the knife used to stab Blackwell were found on Parsons' phone.
"The issues with regard to the clothing identifying him - without any doubt," Perrone said. "The knife — the same thing. The mask — the same thing."
According to investigators, Parsons lived with the Blackwells from March to June of 2022, but at the time of the murder was living in a tent by an orchard near the county line.
Investigators testified that Blackwell was on the phone with a neighbor at the time, then the neighbor heard the screams and called 911.
"[Parsons] does the killing of Mary, then tries to set a fire probably to cover things up," Perrone said. "There's evidence he would've done all of these things and nobody else could've done those things."
According to the autopsy report, Blackwell was stabbed about 15 times and also had defensive stab wounds.
In the courtroom, the defense brought up that Parsons filed an abuse report with Nebraska DHHS approximately 20 days prior to Blackwell's death. The prosecution acknowledged it was aware of the abuse allegations because Parsons admitted to the killing.
According to investigators, during the admission of guilt, he told them "God told him he had to do something" and "they were hurting children."
Police said Parsons' report included allegations of sexual abuse. Those allegations are under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff's Office. They also confirmed other reports made against the family are also being investigated.
Parsons' case now moves to district court. He'll next appear on Dec. 19.
