Family and friends say Shannon King dedicated her life to steering Milwaukee's youth on a positive path.
"I'm in disbelief because I can't believe God took my angel. Like, I don't understand why she was doing so much for the community," Shannon's daughter, Destiny King, said.
King said her mother was headed home Sunday morning when she crashed on the off-ramp at 76th Street and Highway 145.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office told WISN 12 News, King was the only person in the car and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
King owned her own company, Peace of Heart LLC. Fellow activists said she made a real difference in kids.
"Her delivery to the youth, she keeps it real and raw to keep their attention, and they loved it. They respect her," activist Tracey Dent said.
Dent told WISN 12 News he worked with King during last spring's "Youth Victory Over Violence Week."
"This community, this city lost a great leader. The way she connects with these youth, it's mind-boggling. It's amazing how they respond to her. They trust her. They believe in her," Dent said.
King had two daughters ages 2 and 18. Her 18-year-old daughter told WISN 12 News she's now lost without her mother but will try to carry on the legacy she left behind.
"It was just me or her for so many years. I don't know what else I'm gonna do, you only get one mom, everybody only gets one mom," Destiny King said.
Shannon King's funeral is next month.
Monday evening friends and family released balloons during a vigil in her honor.
