Happy 2023! We are so excited to announce the expansion of programming for the Buddy Program, a youth mentoring organization, to Glenwood Springs this year!. As many of you know, Youth Zone has been serving the community since 1976. For many years a part of that programming was the PALS Program, a mentoring program for youth. YouthZone discontinued the PALS program in 2016 and continues to this day to maintain focus on intervention services for at-risk youth who are either involved or at risk of involvement in the justice system.

Obituary: Glennyce DeRoeck
Glennyce DeRoeck was a truly beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother who left us December 30 th, 2022. Glennyce was born in Illinois October 24, 1928 and found her lifelong love of 70 years soon after graduating from high school in Elmhurst, IL. She married Robert ‘Bob’ DeRoeck and they began their lives together enjoying snow skiing, boating, and water skiing with family and friends. They moved to Colorado with their children Sandy DeRoeck Albers, Lee DeRoeck and Teri DeRoeck Luetke and lived in Georgetown, eventually settling in Glenwood Springs. In Glenwood, Glennyce helped Bob run his crane business and was active in the community and helping raise her grandchildren. In her retirement she was a voracious reader and a continued caretaker for her family. Glennyce is survived by her son Lee, 7 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, and 7 great great-grandchildren. Glennyce is preceded in death by her husband Bob, daughters Sandy and Teri, her son-in-law Bob Albers, her grandson Bob Albers, and her great grandson Bobby Albers. She will be truly and deeply missed as she was a force of caring, strength and triumph in her life. A celebration of her life will be held February 4th, 2023 at 1pm at Farnum Holt Funeral Home, followed by a reception at the Glenwood Springs Elks Lodge.

Rifle High School wrestling and girls and boys basketball have been hard at it recently. Among them, the girls (7-9, 2-3) get set to play Summit away at 6 p.m. Friday. The boys (0-14, 0-6) also play Summit away but at 7 p.m. Friday. For wrestling, Rifle girls host a dual against Olathe at 5 p.m. Thursday while Rifle wrestling also prepares for a the 2023 Duff Seaney Invitational in Cañon City on Jan. 28.

Coffee and raw conversations between Rifle Police Officers and city residents will take over a local cafe this week, according to a news release. Work progresses on methane capture at abandoned Redstone mines
Depending on how you measure, methane emissions in the atmosphere are up to 86 times more harmful than carbon-dioxide emissions. The abandoned coal mines near Redstone threaten the environment with leaking methane.
