A man is dead after a trailer home caught fire Tuesday morning in rural Payne County.
Neighbors said they came outside and saw smoke billowing from the trailer. Firefighters rushed in to help but said it was already too late.
"They said it was a structure fire and they believe there may be a person inside the house," said Undersheriff Marvin Noyes, Payne County Sheriff’s Office.
Just before 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, a trailer home in the small town of Glencoe went up in flames. First responders rushed to the scene knowing the homeowner was still inside the burning trailer.
"Once they were able to enter the home, they did determine that there was a person inside there that had succumbed to the fire," Noyes said.
The state fire marshal’s office is now investigating the fire but authorities said there was no foul play.
"It’s still under investigation, but I think at this time they’re leaning towards probably electrical, possibly a little electric heater that was inside the home," Noyes said.
As it gets colder out, authorities said people need to be careful when it comes to space heaters.
"Especially if you have the extension cords and those wires where people walk over them, there’s a lot of traffic, those wires can become bare. If they’re not at the proper gauge wire, they can get too hot and cause fire on rugs," Noyes said.
