Commissioners in Brooke County have approved their seventh water and sewer project for American Rescue Plan Act funds.
The Brooke Hancock Jefferson Metropolitan Planning Commission and Region 11 Planning and Development Council requested immediate funding of $986,500 for the Hammond PSD water system improvements.
The main purpose of the project is to apply significant improvements to the water system and extend the lines of the facility, which now serves around 900 customers.
"All of that funding that came in from the federal government through the American Relief Act, we have dedicated almost all of that at this point to water and sewer projects,” Commissioner AJ Thomas said. “And that was at the urging of Senator (Joe) Manchin’s Office, as well as the state auditor’s office.”
The total cost of the project is around $8.3 million. According to information from the Planning and Development Council and BHJ, $4.6 million for the project will come from an Army Corps of Engineers Grant that will be matched by 25 percent. The rest of the funding, including the county’s contributions, will come from local organizations.
There is no completion date on the project.
