GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Replacing the deteriorating Porlier Pier with a similar structure would cost $1.6 million, according to a new report.
The pier is at the base of Porlier Street, where it turns into Adams Street. It is adjacent to the Fox River Trail, on the east bank of the river. Most of the original railroad bridge, built in about 1900, was removed, and the current pedestrian pier was installed in 2005.
An engineering report earlier this year determined it is structurally unsound and should be removed.
A new report by Akro Engineering & Design says it will cost about $145,000 to removed the wood structure and supporting piles. Then, it offers three options for the site:
New fishing pier to match existing character and size ($1,604,000)
- Replace with new pier of the same size (138’ x 16’) and character, including wood timber piles, heavy timber girders, cross bracing, wood decking and lighting.
New, smaller fishing pier ($631,000)
- Replace with a smaller pier (50’ x 16’), closer to water level, using modern materials.
New fishing platform ($94,000)
- A small fishing platform (40’ by 8’) would be connected to the shoreline
The city’s Parks Committee will discuss the project at 5 p.m. Wednesday. The meeting is in Room 207 of City Hall, 100 N. Jefferson Street, or by zoom.
