Iowa's News Now checked back in at Donnelly's Pub in Iowa City, which has been a popular spot for soccer fans to catch the World Cup games.
While Curt Fitzgerald is the only one of his friends who actually understands soccer, he was far from alone Tuesday in cheering on the U.S. team against Iran.
"I don't know, a lot of people like soccer. It's United States," he says. "It's a Tuesday - who has anything to do on a Tuesday when you're a college student."
The midweek matchup didn't deter many from coming out, including Dabash Ishkoirala and his friends.
"We all came to cheer on the USA, it's a massive tournament. We're excited to have it here in four years. We all had to come out, it's a Tuesday, but you know when it comes to supporting the red, white, and blue, we all had to be here."
While there were a few controversies going into the matchup, the mood was jovial at the pub. Especially when the U.S. scored their only (counted) goal.
The U.S. beat Iran 1-0, pushing them into the round of 16 against the Netherlands. That game is on Saturday on Fox 28.
