GROVELAND TWP. (WWJ) -- A man from Michigan's Thumb region has died after a crash overnight in Northern Oakland County, but the wrecked car wasn't discovered until morning.

Michigan State Police took a 911 call around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday from a passing Good Smartian who'd stopped to check on a vehicle spotted in a ditch along Grange Hall Rd. near Ortonville Rd. in Groveland Township.

The wrecked vehicle was cold, MSP said, and the driver — identified as a 33-year-old Caro man — was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation showed the driver was coming to a sharp curve in the road when the car went off the road. The vehicle then hit a tree and uprooted another, before coming to rest in the ditch.

Alcohol bottles were found inside the vehicle, police said, but it's still not clear whether the driver had been drinking.

MSP said the Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy.

The investigation is ongoing.
