DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The City of Dallas is planning for its "Home for the Holidays" campaign. The partnership between Dallas Parks and Recreation and Dallas ISD was first launched in 2007.

"The reason we started this in 2007 was we looked at the tale of two cities: the north and the south," says Councilman Tennell Atkins.

Since then, organizers say they have served 7,000 meals and provided gifts for more than 500 families.

"It's not just a matter of filling their stomachs, but it's giving them a sense of belonging and hope," says Councilman Paul Ridley. "They're a valued member of a community, and that's what I think is the most important thing this event gives people."

Centerplate and Dallas College are preparing the meals. Sponsors include the Dallas Cowboys and Atmos Energy.

"This program truly exemplifies the true meaning for the season, understanding it's better to give than to receive," says former Dallas Cowboy Greg Ellis.

"Home for the Holidays" will take place at five recreation centers.

"Communities can come together," says Dallas Parks and Rec's John Jenkins. "They can break bread together. They can support each other."
