Washington Nationals Sign OF Stone Garrett

The Washington Nationals have stayed active today. Following their earlier signing of 3B/1B Jemier Candelario, the club just announced they have also signed OF Stone Garrett to a Major League Contract, per Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post.

Stone Garrett hasn’t had much Major League experience, as he just made his MLB Debut last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. In his time in the majors, Garrett hit .297 with 4 Home Runs and 10 RBIS for an .848 OPS over 27 Games. He has spent 8 seasons in the minors with a career .738 OPS, but does have some pop as he has 94 Home Runs in 642 career Minor League games, good for about 23 Home Runs every 162 Games. He also hit 28 Home Runs in just 103 Games last year in Triple-A.

This signing may not move the needle for the Nats or their fans, but one thing can be said that couldn’t last offseason: The Nationals are at least active. We knew both with the state of the play on-field combined with the potential sale of the franchise that this offseason wouldn’t be flashy, but finding ways to add cost-effective pieces and depth is exactly what this team needs to be doing. Hopefully today is just the start to a productive offseason.
