Several athletes shined and are finalists for the American-Statesman's girls and boys high school athletes of the week, a new feature this year honoring prep students that will be voted on each week by the public.

Austin-area high school football Week 14: Player of the week named; 17 athletes honored

Students in all UIL varsity sports are eligible and the poll will launch on Tuesdays, close on Thursdays and winners will be announced Fridays each week.

Take a moment to look at some of the top performances in the last week and vote in our poll below.

Boys athlete of the week nominations

Judson Crockett, cornerback, Westlake

The Chaparral junior had two solo tackles and three assists, broke up a pass and scored a defensive touchdown in a 44-7 victory over San Benito in a Class 6A DI regional semifinal. Crockett has totaled 64 tackles (35 solos), two interceptions two fumble recoveries so far this season for the 13-0 Chaparrals.

Troy Heugly, defensive end, Wimberley

The Texan junior had four sacks, three quarterback pressures and a forced fumble in a 64-6 victory over Jarrell in a Class 4A DII regional semifinal. In seven games, Heugly has 10 sacks for a Texan squad that has given up six points in three playoff games.

Kyle Koch, wide receiver, Dripping Springs

The Tiger junior had three catches for 131 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 54 yards and two more TDs in a 45-0 victory over Harlingen in a Class 6A DII regional semifinal. Koch has posted 60 catches for 896 yards and 10 receiving touchdowns for the Tigers this season.

Alex Witt, running back, Vandegrift

The senior was the man of the hour as Vandegrift scored the game’s final 42 points in a 49-21 victory over San Antonio Harlan in a Class 6A Division II regional semifinal at the Alamodome on Friday. After his team trailed 21-14 at halftime, he scored three of his four touchdowns in the decisive third quarter to give Vandegrift the lead for good. He also rushed for 105 of his 141 yards in the period as the Vipers extended their winning streak to 12 games.

Girls athlete of the week nominations

Jade Clack, basketball, Austin High

The Maroons got a huge double-double from the senior???, who scored 24 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, blocked two shots and had three assists as Austin High beat Cibolo Steele 55-46 for its ninth consecutive win. For the season, Clack is averaging 18.3 points, 7.7 boards and 3.5 steals per game.

Bailey Featherstone, basketball, Round Rock

The senior had 24 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and five assists as the Dragons improved to 9-1 by beating Lampasas 54-40 last week. Featherstone is averaging nearly 18 points as the Dragons are off to their best start in more than two decades.

MaeSyn Gay, basketball, Burnet

The two-sport standout scored 23 points in a 58-32 win over Mason last week. Gay helped lead the Class 4A Bulldogs to three straight wins last week, beating Class 5A Leander 63-29, 6A Dripping Springs 57-24 and 2A power Mason.

Tea Rodriguez, basketball, Marble Falls

The senior led the Mustangs with 16 points in a 61-25 rout over Rouse last week. One-loss Marble Falls is ranked No. 2 in the Statesman's Class 4A and others poll. For the season, Rodriguez is averaging 13.4 points and 3.5 steals per game.
