Fatal crash: 11-year-old killed in crash on Route 8 in Brookfield

An 11-year-old boy was killed Monday evening after the vehicle he was in struck a tow truck in Madison County, according to a release from New York State Police.

Troopers were dispatched just before 6 p.m. to the town of Brookfield, where an investigation revealed an SUV driven by 29-year-old Abner G. Padilla of Utica struck a parked flatbed tow truck while traveling south on Route 8. Police said the truck was partially parked in the road but had all lights activated.

Nelson G. Padilla, 11, of Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, was ejected from the backseat of the SUV. He was later pronounced dead at the scene, the release said. Abner Padilla and a 9-year-old in the backseat were not injured.

Abner Padilla, who does not have a license, was evaluated at the scene and showed no signs of impairment, the release said. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
