A 49-year-old man has died two days after he was injured in an apartment building fire near Elsmere early Sunday morning. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal said a two-story building on the 300 block of Mary St. in the Richardson Park development caught fire just before 2 a.m. on Sunday. Firefighters said they arrived to find flames "shooting" from the building and the 49-year-old man trapped in his first-floor apartment. He was taken to Christiana Hospital in critical condition from burns and smoke inhalation, according to the fire marshal's office.

A fire in the Richardson Park development near Elsmere on Nov. 27, 2022, led to the death of a 49-year-old man.

He was transferred to the Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pennsylvania, where he later died. His name has not yet been released.

The two people living on the second floor of the apartment building escaped unharmed, the Office of the State Fire Marshal said. The fire caused about $200,000 in damage.
