When you are an elite college football program, you tend to lose assistant coaches to other programs. Programs poach your team to get assistants to become head coaches. The Ohio State football program already had to deal with that when Jeff Hafley was poached by Boston College.

Another assistant coach might end up getting poached soon too. He’s one that the Buckeyes absolutely have to keep. He’s integral to the success that they’ve had over the last four or so years. That coach is wide receivers coach Brian Hartline.

Hartline has done a masterful job coaching with the Buckeyes so far. He recruits like a madman, develops receivers into first-round picks, and helps the offense as a whole be better. He very well might be the best recruiter in the country right now. No one else is on his level.

The Ohio State football program might lose Brian Hartline to an in-state rival.

I’ve talked before about how Hartline could be an assistant that is set to get a head coaching job soon. Now, it looks like he’s one of the front runners to get the Cincinnati job. That job came open when Wisconsin hired former Buckeye defensive coordinator Luke Fickell to be their head coach.

Losing Hartline would be a massive blow to this program. To lose him to an in-state rival would be disastrous. He would make Cinci a threat to take wide receiver recruits every year from Ohio State. He would likely be able to keep Cinci at the same level Fickell had them as a program too, minus Playoff appearances.

There are a few other coaches that are in the running for this job as well, so it’s not a done deal that Hartline is gone. It is rather concerning that he could end up leaving though. It will happen eventually, and Ohio State football fans need to be ready for that.
