2022 midterm election results are now official, at least in the Lehigh Valley.

Election boards in Lehigh and Northampton counties certified their initial counts from the Nov. 8 election by Pennsylvania’s Monday deadline without issue, county spokespeople confirmed for lehighvalleylive.com.

“A handful of other counties” were not able to meet the deadline, according to the Pennsylvania Department of State, which described it as “a fluid situation.”

In Wilkes-Barre, the Luzerne County Board of Elections deadlocked on its certification vote Monday, risking litigation from the state or candidates. Paper shortages caused ballot problems and extended voting hours in at least one precinct. The board’s abstaining member later told The Associated Press that he has since received assurances that few if any voters were unable to cast ballots and that all provisional ballots had been counted. He said he planned to vote in favor of certifying the results at a board meeting set for Wednesday.

The state department told the AP that only “legally valid and properly filed” recount petitions can prompt a county to withhold certification for the office targeted by the recount effort.

The Philadelphia Inquirer has reported that supporters of failed Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano are making a statewide attempt to flood Pennsylvania courts with recount petitions to delay certifications and force retallying by hand. Mastriano conceded the race to Democrat Josh Shapiro on Nov. 13.

Recount petitions have delayed certification in Reading’s Berks County, where the Reading Eagle reports general election recounts are being sought by the county Republican committee in 30 precincts.

In Pittsburgh, Allegheny County’s Board of Elections voted Monday to certify the election results at 1,311 polling places but did not vote to certify results from 12 polling places where recount petitions have been filed. A statement from the county government said its lawyer was seeking to have those challenges dismissed in the coming days because the people who sought the recounts failed to also post $50 bonds for each ballot box to be recounted.

Counties have spent the time since Election Day in part counting provisional ballots, which were filled out by voters when there was a question of eligibility or other circumstances, and military and overseas ballots, which were due by Nov. 15.
