10 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘Violent Night,’ ‘Emancipation,’ and More!
Wondering what the new movies coming out this week are? There’s a fresh take on Santa starring David Harbour in the role of not-so-Jolly St. Nick in Violent Night. Will Smith’s return to the screen as a slave escaping for freedom in Emancipation. And the documentary Sr. tells the story of a famous father produced by a more famous son, Robert Downey Jr.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: November 28, 2022 – December 4, 2022
Violent Night (2022)
Rating: R
Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, December 2, 2022.
Summary: Violent Night takes place when a group of mercenaries attack the estate of a wealthy family, a little girl asks for help on Christmas Eve. Santa Claus (David Harbour) is about to answer the little girl’s wish and finds out who has been naughty. In fact, it’s not going to be such a silent night after all.
What to Watch For: David Harbour (Stranger Things, Hellboy) researched the role and found that Santa Claus has had a darker side in history beyond modern-day advertisements.
Word on the Street: The film is from award-winning Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola. He’s best known for his movies What Happened to Monday (2017) and Dead Snow (2009).
My Take: One of my all-time favorite actors, Beverly D’Angelo (Coal Miner’s Daughter, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation), is in this film.
Emancipation (2022)
Rating: R
Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, December 2, 2022, and Apple TV+ on Friday, December 9, 2022.
Summary: In Emancipation, Peter (Will Smith) is a slave who has been taken from his family to a new plantation. Peter learns that the Union Army is near and escapes cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on his quest for freedom and to see his family again.
What to Watch For: The film has been inspired by a true story based on a series of 1863 photos taken of a former slave during a Union Army medical examination. The images were so shocking that they contributed to the growing public opposition to slavery.
Word on the Street: This is Will Smith’s first film since his Academy Award-winning performance in King Richard (2021).
My Take: The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua, director of Training Day (2001) and The Equalizer (2014).
Nanny (2022)
Rating: R
Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, December 2, 2022, and on Amazon Prime on Friday, Dec. 16, 2022.
Summary: Nanny is about Aisha (Anna Diop), an immigrant nanny who starts a new job for an Upper East Side family. Aisha is working toward making enough money to bring her son from Africa to join her. However, Aisha begins seeing things in her dreams and real life that becomes terrifying and could destroy her hopes for her future.
What to Watch For: The film has been a hit on the film festival circuit, winning the Grand Jury Prize at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
Word on the Street: Anna Diop is best known for her role as Rayne Thomas in the 2019 film US.
My Take: I remember Anna Diop from her appearances as Diedra in the TV series Everybody Hates Chris.
Sr. (2022)
Rating: R
Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, December 2, 2022.
Summary: Sr. is a documentary on the life and career of Robert Downey Sr., the director of irreverent films in the 70s and 80s, who became a latter-day actor (Boogie Nights, Magnolia), and was, of course, the father of Robert Downey Jr.
What to Watch For: The film is produced by Robert Downey Jr. and his wife, Susan.
Word on the Street: Besides Robert Downey Jr., Norman Lear, Paul Thomas Anderson, Sean Hayes, and Alan Arkin make appearances in the film.
My Take: I am a fan of Robert Downey Sr.’s irreverent look at the adverting world with his 1969 film Putney Swope.
Darby and the Dead (2022)
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: Premiering on Hulu on Friday, December 2, 2022.
Summary: Darby and the Dead is about Darby Harper (Riele Downs), who, after suffering a near-death experience in her childhood, sees ghosts and helps them travel to the great beyond. Darby is an outcast at school, but all that is about to change when the most popular girl in her high school, Capri (Auli’i Cravalho), dies and needs Darby’s help.
What to Watch For: A couple of legendary TV stars, Tony Dansa and Wayne Knight, star as two ghosts that befriend Darby in the film.
Word on the Street: Riele Downs burst on the scene as Amelia Mercer in the 2005 film Four Brothers. And she is best known for her role as Charlotte Page in the TV series Henry Danger.
My Take: We all know Aulli Cravalho, the voice of Moana in the 2016 animated film Moana.
Four Samosas (2022)
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, December 2, 2022.
Summary: Four Somsas is about Vinny (Venk Potula), an out-of-work, South Asian American rapper whose ex-girlfriend keeps tormenting him with her upcoming wedding. Vinny decides to get back at his ex by enlisting three friends to help steal her wedding diamonds from his ex-girlfriend’s father.
What to Watch For: The film’s director, Ravi Kapoor, is best known for his role as Dr. Mahesh ‘Bug’ on the hit TV series Crossing Jordan.
Word on the Street: The film won the Audience Award at the 2022 Newport Beach Film Festival.
My Take: I love that Venk Potula was discovered dancing on the streets of L.A. by Nick Cannon.
Lady Chatterley’s Lover (2022)
Rating: R
Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, December 2, 2022.
Summary: Lady Chatterley’s Lover tells the legendary story of the unhappily married aristocrat (Emma Corrin) who begins a torrid affair with the gamekeeper (Jack O’Connell) on her husband’s country estate.
What to Watch For: The film is based on the infamous D.H. Lawrence book, which has been made into numerous films, some of which have been X-rated.
Word on the Street: Emma Corrin is best known for her role as the young Princess Diana in the TV series The Crown.
My Take: I first noticed Jack O’Connell as Eric Love in the 2013 film Starred Up.
The Eternal Daughter (2022)
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, December 2, 2022.
Summary: In The Eternal Daughter, a middle-aged daughter and her elderly mother return to their former family hotel. This once-grand manor now is only full of long-buried secrets in a place brimming with mystery.
What to Watch For: Tilda Swinton does a rare thing, plays the two leads in the film of both the mother and the daughter.
Word on the Street: The film is from director Joanna Hogg, the acclaimed filmmaker of The Souvenir (2019) and Archipelago (2010).
My Take: Anytime Tilda Swinton appears in a film, I will be there to see it.
Spoiler Alert (2022)
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, December 2, 2022.
Summary: Spoiler Alert is about Michael Ausiello (Jim Parsons), a famous and successful media critic who has never had success with love. He meets Kit (Ben Aldridge), a man who falls for Michael, even his rather large Smurf collection. Then Kit comes down with cancer, and everything changes.
What to Watch For: The film is based on the book Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies by long-time TV critic Michael Ausiello.
Word on the Street: Jim Parsons is best known for his four-time Emmy-Award-winning role as Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory.
My Take: I loved the book, so I will be sure to see this film.
Clean Slate (2021)
Rating: N/A
Summary: Clean Slate is a documentary about two friends in a Southern drug recovery program who decide to make a short film to express their struggles with recovery and the pain they have caused their families.
What to Watch For: The film was a nominee for Best Documentary Feature at the 2022 Nashville Film Festival.
Word on the Street: The film is from Jared Callahan, the director of the award-winning documentary Janey Makes a Play (2015).
My Take: The film played to a packed house at the 2022 Atlanta Film Festival.
