The Detroit Tigers have re-signed four players who became free agents earlier this month.
Infielder Jermaine Palacios, infielder/outfielder Brendon Davis, catcher Michael Papierski and right-handed pitcher Miguel Diaz all agreed to minor-league deals and were assigned to Triple-A Toledo, according to the team’s transactions log.
Palacios, 26, was claimed him off waivers from the Minnesota Twins on Oct. 13. He was waived and outrighted on Nov. 10 and became a free agent before re-signing with the Tigers.
A native of Venezuela, Palacios made his MLB debut with the Twins in 2022. He hit just .143 in 77 plate appearances, drawing four walks and striking out 27 times. He has substantial experience at just about every infield position except first base, and has even played a bit of outfield.
Davis, 25, was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels in May and made his Major League debut with Detroit in September.
Originally drafted out of high school by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015, he was sent to the Texas Rangers along with two others in the Yu Darvish trade in 2017. He struggled with the Rangers and was claimed by the Angels a year later in the minor-league portion of the Rule 5 Draft. The Angels added him to the 40-man roster last winter before placing him on waivers in May.
The Tigers claimed Papierski off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds on Oct. 14.
Papierski, who turns 27 in February, was drafted by the Houston Astros out of Louisiana State University in the ninth round in 2017. The Astros traded him to the San Francisco Giants, where he made his Major League debut in May. Papierski was claimed off waivers by the Reds in June.
He struggled with the bat in both stops, hitting just .143 in 103 plate appearances.
Diaz, who turned 28 on Monday, pitched well for Triple-A Toledo in 2022 and got a late-season look with the Tigers, pitching in three games. He spent parts of four seasons with the San Diego Padres before signing a minor-league deal with Detroit before the 2022 season.
