CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A new partnership between the DuPage Health Coalition and RIP Medical Debt is aiming to abolish medical debt.

According to the Urban Institute, 14% of Illinois residents have medical debt in collections...that jumps to 20% for communities of color.

The collaboration is working to bring those numbers down by partnering with local hospitals and health partners.

Another goal of the partnership is to get a better idea of who in the community is most at risk for medical debt...and test and create solutions to reduce the debt burden.

They're also promoting community dialogue to identify  obstacles to accessing healthcare and foster health equity.
