Plane full of military personnel heading to Poland makes emergency landing at O'Hare

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A plane full of American soldiers made an unscheduled landing Monday afternoon at O’Hare Airport because of potential trouble in the cargo hold.

There had been a report of smoke in the cargo hold of the Atlas Air 747 after it took off from Topeka, Kansas. Officials said there were more than 300 U.S. military personnel onboard and headed to Poland. They’re said to be part of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team and safely evacuated the plane after landing at O’Hare.

Atlas Air said it does not know what caused the smoke. The military personnel are believed to have continued on to Poland.
