Locals react to suspected shark bite at Hobe Sound Beach
BEACHGOERS HERE AT HOPE SOUND BEACH REACTING TO AN INCIDENT THAT TOOK PLACE OVER THE WEEKEND. MANY OF THE LOCALS SAYING IT’S NOT SURPRISE. I’M NOT SURPRISED THAT SUPERSTAR KEEP BEACH SHARK FISHING IN HIGH SCHOOL AND I SEE HIM OUT THERE ALL THE TIME WHEN I SURF KITES OR ALL THAT STUFF. SO THE SHARKS IN THE WATER. PUGH HERLIN IS UNFAZED BY WHAT AUTHORITIES ARE CALLING A SUSPECT SHARK BITE AT HIS SURF SPOT. I MEAN, THEY LIVE THERE. IF YOU GO TO THE WATER, THERE’S SHARKS THERE. NOT MUCH. YOU CAN DO. BUT A YOUNG GIRL DID AS MUCH AS SHE COULD WHEN SHE ENCOUNTERED ONE SUNDAY. ACCORDING TO MARTIN COUNTY FIRE OFFICIALS, IT WAS AROUND NOON WHEN, QUOTE, LIFEGUARDS HEARD HER SCREAMING THAT SHE HAD BEEN BITTEN. THEY RUSHED OVER, FOUND HER WITH A WOUND TO HER LEG AND BEGAN TREATMENT TO RESTRICT THE BLEEDING AT THE PARKING LOT WAS PRETTY CLEARED OUT. IT WAS SHOCKING BECAUSE I REMEMBER WE CAME HERE AND WE WERE LIKE, WE GOT TO SPOT EMILY CONROY DIDN’T REALIZE THE AMBULANCE SHE SAW SPEEDING BY IN ROUTE TO THE BEACH WAS TRANSFERRED. THE BITE VICTIM TO SAINT MARY’S HOSPITAL. OTHERS HAD PILED OUT OF THE PUBLIC PARK WHILE LIFEGUARDS KEPT EVERYONE IN THE LOOP AND OUT OF THE WATER. THEY WERE RUNNING AROUND TRYING TO FILL EVERYONE IN. EVERYONE WAS ASKING LOTS OF QUESTIONS. THEY’RE OUT THERE ALL THE TIME, DAYLIGHT, NIGHT TIME. IT DOESN’T MATTER. YOU KNOW, WE KIND OF GOT TO EXPECT IT WHEN WE’RE GOING INTO THEIR HOUSE. THAT’S WHY LIFELONG FISHERMAN E.J. MCKILLOP SAYS HE STAYS ON THE SAND. YOU KNOW, THE AVERAGE PERSON, I THINK IF THEY REALLY REALIZE HOW MANY SHARKS ARE OUT HERE AT ANY GIVEN TIME, THEY PROBABLY WOULDN’T GO IN THE WATER. BUT AFTER HEARING THE VICTIM IS RECOVERING FROM NON-LIFE THREATENING INJURIES, LOCALS LIKE HUGH HERLIN WENT RIGHT BACK IN TO HELP. GO IN? YEAH. I’M GOING TO GO FOR A SWIM. HOPE SOUTH BEACH IS REOPENED AND IT’S BUSINESS AS USU

That’s because others had piled out of the public park while lifeguards kept everyone in the loop and out of the water. “They were running around trying to fill everyone in.
