AWAY. RIGHT NOW, THE DALLAS CENTER GRIMES SCHOOL BOARD IS DISCUSSING HOW TO HANDLE BOOK FAN REQUESTS. CURRENTLY, THE DISTRICT HAS A COMMITTEE TO HANDLE REQUESTS FROM PARENTS. IT HAS EIGHT VOTING MEMBERS, INCLUDING TWO STUDENTS APPOINTED BY THE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL. BUT A PROPOSED PLAN WOULD HAVE CHANGED THE STUDENTS TO NINE VOTING MEMBERS. TONIGHT, STUDENTS SAID THEY DESERVE MORE OF A VOICE IN THEIR COMMENTS. MADE A DIFFERENCE. I’M ALL FOR ENACTING POSITIVE CHANGE. BUT IF IT AIN’T BROKE, WHY FIX IT? THIS POLICY IS SUPER SOUND AND THAT IS REFLECTED IN THE FACT THAT IT IS BEING USED IN MANY SCHOOLS AROUND THE STATE. IF OUR DISTRICT DOES NOT INCLUDE STUDENTS AS VOTING MEMBERS OF THE RECONSIDERATION COMMITTEE AND BAN SOME OF THE BOOKS IN OUR LIBRARIES, THE MESSAGE IS WE ARE GOING TO IGNORE OUR OWN MISSION STATEMENT AND STUDENTS DON’T REALLY MATTER. AFTER ALMOST AN HOUR OF PUBLIC COMMENT, THE BOARD DECIDED THE STUDENTS WOULD BE VOTING MEMBERS, BUT THEY WOULD VOTE ANONYMOUSLY FOR THEIR OWN PROTECTION. The Dallas Center-Grimes School Board is considering a new plan to handle book ban requests from community members.Currently, if a parent requests a ban on a certain book, there is a committee in place to consider that request.That "reconsideration committee" has eight voting members, including two students appointed by the DCG high school principal. But the board considered a proposal Monday evening that would change the students' status to "non-voting members."DCGHS students voiced their concerns at the meeting, saying they deserve to have voting representation."I'm all for enacting positive change, but if it ain't broke, why fix it?" one student asked. She said the current policy is "super sound" and is used in many schools across Iowa.Another student said if the student committee members become "non-voting" members, the district would send a bad message."The message is, 'We are going to ignore our own mission statement and students don't really matter,'" the student said. Multiple parents also shared their opinions during an hour-long public comment session.Ultimately, the board decided the student committee members should be "voting members," but vote anonymously for their own protection.
