***BREAK*** ***ED*** New on 5: a New Hampshire dog is recovering from a terrifying attack by a BEAR. ***VO*** The dog’s owner says he had just let his dog Toby outside Saturday night in Goffstown...when a mother bear and her 2 cubs emerged from behind 2 trash cans... and went after the dog. Toby was bitten on the back and side. The owner was also bitten, but not badly hurt. ***SOT*** ***CONT VO*** Hurley says Toby is improving.

A dog suffered serious injuries in New Hampshire after it was attacked by a bear, according to its owner.Jim Hurley said he let his dog, Toby, was attacked after he let the dog outside of his Goffstown home Saturday night.Hurley said bears came up from a wooded area to his backyard by the trash cans. Fish and Game Department officials said three bears — two cubs and a sow — were involved in the incident."I heard this rustling and growling and stuff so I walked up towards here to see what it was and I was just probably right about here when something confronted me," Hurley said. Hurley said he was also attacked and suffered some bruises and scratches. His dog is still hospitalized at Rockingham Emergency Veterinary Hospital in Windham. He said Toby is eating and drinking but bled a lot after the attack. The vet bill is more than $5,000, Hurley said."But I'm looking toward the quality of life … and that's what comes first," Hurley said. "My focus is him."Fish and Game officials said the bear was acting normal. "She's going to protect her young," said Lt. Adam Cheney with Fish and Game. "The dog came, she felt threatened."Fish and Game officials are urging people to avoid leaving food outside home because bears scour for it this time of year. They said residents should be careful with food and bird feeders outside, which can attract bears."The bears just like with any other animal once they get to an area they're being fed constantly they become territorial, so they will try to protect that," Cheney said. Fish and Game said attacks like this are rare. Hurley said his dog should be leaving the hospital Tuesday.
