Police Captain Casey Moilanen says the latest reported theft of the car part occurred around 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Walmart in northern Rochester. Moilanen said the converter was reported stolen off a Ram pick-up that belongs to a 60-year-old Nevada man.

Police say the theft was reported by a witness in the parking lot who reported hearing the sound of a saw then seeing the suspected thief emerge from underneath the pickup with the catalytic converter in hand. Moilanen thanked the witness for their cooperation and said no arrests have been made but that investigators have a solid lead.

Moilanen also said the reported theft is an example of how catalytic converter thefts can happen anywhere at any time. He says thieves tend to target large shopping center parking lots because it can be difficult to see them sawing off the car part.
