The Big Red fans cheered and the band played as a new head coach for the Nebraska Cornhuskers was welcomed home for the first time.
Matt Rhule will be leading the team and so many hope this will finally be the program's big break.
"I'm excited for the chance to start a new era," said Sarah Marlowe.
Sarah Marlowe and Dave Ashby were among the fans outside Memorial Stadium Monday.
Ashby says he's a season ticket holder but he boycotted the games for two years.
Now, he will give Rhule a chance.
"As a diehard Husker fan, I just hope that they get this coaching pick right. It's been a long time since I walked out of the Memorial Stadium happy," said Ashby.
Sitting with their free "Matt Rhule" t-shirts, the pair hopes to have some joy when they walk out of the "Sea of Red" next.
That's also how students are feeling.
"I'm kind of excited, to be honest, especially that like how the last coach didn't go so well and in his speech, it seemed like he actually cared," said Sam Romshek.
But overall, Big Red fans tell me they want the program to do this with Rhule's help.
"At least compete against teams that we should be competing against," said Romshek.
