West Palm Beach doctor victimized by check washing
A West Palm Beach doctor is issuing a warning but not about anything medical.
Dr. Olayemi Osiyemi wants everyone to know about check washing.
Osiyemi wrote two checks last week and put them in the mail.

He believes someone broke into the panel of mailboxes outside his office, took the checks, removed the name and amounts he had written and added new information.
The two checks were supposed to total around $700.
Instead, they were cashed for nearly $18,000.
“I mean, it blew my mind,” Osiyemi said. “I couldn’t even fathom how someone could do this.”
Fortunately, Osiyemi checks his accounts on an almost daily basis.
He was able to identify the fraud and stop payment on the checks.
Authorities said Osiyemi’s case appears to be one of more than 370,000 cases of suspected check washing this year.

They said the best way to protect yourself is to not put checks in your mailbox but drop them off at the post office.
Osiyemi had a different idea when he was asked if he’d ever write a check again.
“Absolutely not,” he said. “No more check writing. Everything is going to be done remotely.”
