All Mobile County Public Schools have security cameras, and some are currently in the process of becoming more advanced.
The majority of the 91 schools already have something known as the 'crisis alert system.'
BC Rain and Murphy are the two remaining schools that need to their camera systems upgraded.
Andy Gatewood is the Director of Safety and Security for the Mobile County Public School System.
He says BC Rain and Murphy currently have what's called 'analog camera systems'; they're being changed to an 'IP system', something that's already in place at the other 89 schools.
"We've recently changed to an enterprise video management software system, where all of our video is pulled back to servers and so that will allow us to view those cameras and move toward a bunch of higher level analytics than we've had before and those cameras will allow us to do that," said Gatewood
Facial recognition and other upgrades are also on the horizon.
"Facial recognition is where we can, if we have a person that should not be on campus, then we can start to recognize those persons before they actually enter the building," said Gatewood.
The MCPSS has been trying to stay proactive when it comes to student safety.
A couple months ago, staff, students, and local public safety agencies took part in an active shooter training at Semmes Middle School
Gatewood says some campuses where there's children with special needs have cameras in the classrooms.
He says there hasn't been too much discussion as to putting cameras in every classroom, but you will find them in the gym, cafeteria, the exterior, and so forth.
