'Unusual activity' forces shutdown of all Town of Islip computers
All Town of Islip computers were shut down early Black Friday due to what's being called "unusual activity."
Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter says an issue was first detected on the day after Thanksgiving at around 5:50 a.m.
"They noticed unusual activity so I don't know if I would term it a hack or a breach, but it didn't seem right," Carpenter says.
The planned shutdown affected the town's 1,000 computers and disrupted the phones, which have some sporadic outages.
Employees were asked not to use their town computers Monday, and people who live in Islip were directed to the town's website or to call the main number while they investigated what happened.
Carpenter says the machines where unusual activity was detected are coming offline. She says they are taking time bring it back up and appropriately.
Residents say they hope the system is back up and running soon.
The town supervisor says if anyone has an inspection or something scheduled, they could be a little inconvenienced, but she says there is no need for any concerns about personal information being stolen.
Carpenter also says it's early in the investigation into what exactly happened.
