Search of parolee’s home yields fentanyl pills with street value of $55,000
Officers with the Kern County Probation Department seized several thousand fentanyl pills while checking on a parolee Wednesday at his home in central Bakersfield. A department news release said Leo Espinoza had more than 5,550 M-30 fentanyl pills with a street value of about $55,000 at his residence in the 1700 block of Forest Street. It said he was charged with possession of a narcotic for the purpose of sales.

Kern County jury convicts Ridgecrest man of murder, attempted murder
A Kern County jury found a Ridgecrest man guilty of killing his neighbor and trying to murder his wife, the Kern County District Attorney's Office announced Friday. Jose Romero, 67, argued with his then-wife on Aug. 20, 2017 before going out for beers, the district attorney's office said in a news release. Romero began arguing with his wife again after returning and then attempted to shoot the woman, Estela Rodas.

Attorneys ready for murder trial of Bakersfield woman who struck, killed siblings
Attorneys said Friday they are ready to proceed with the murder trial of a Bakersfield woman accused of driving while intoxicated and killing a brother and sister. Lisa Core, 47, was charged with two second-degree murder counts and two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in the deaths of JJ Malone, 19, and Caylee Brown, 9. Core has also pleaded not guilty to driving with her license suspended or revoked for DUI and failing to show proof of insurance at the scene of the accident.

Appeals court upholds murder conviction of Leslie Chance
The 5th District Court of Appeal has upheld the murder conviction of Leslie Chance, a Bakersfield elementary school principal who killed her husband. The panel of judges concluded a Kern County Sheriff's deputy who investigated the case should have disclosed information to defense attorneys about interviews he conducted, but that didn't warrant a reversal of the murder conviction, according to the opinion released Friday.
