Urge governor to halt Taylor execution, allow time for better investigation
Missourians, like people the world over, want our justice system to be fair and accurate. That’s all the more true with the death penalty; no one should support wrongly-convicted people facing that irreversible sentence, yet that’s a haunting reality as officials plan to execute Leonard Raheem Taylor on Feb. 7. We urge Gov. Mike Parson to stay his execution and allow an investigation to consider compelling evidence of his possible wrongful conviction.

Allow city, schools to handle issues without overreach from state politicians
As a board member of the Worley Street Roundtable, I would like to respectfully urge Gov. Mike Parson, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey and sundry politically motivated spectators to allow the city of Columbia to handle concerns about its diversity celebration. Divisive and exaggerated rhetoric and interference by state officials is not helpful to our community, our city or our schools.

Reactions to diversity event mirror culture wars in America, not unity we need
After a long break, Missouri is back as a bellwether. But this time, we’re not a vote indicator — we’re an alarm echoing the nation’s ongoing culture wars. The incident surrounding Columbia Public Schools and the Columbia Values Diversity celebration late last week immediately erupted into social media political fisticuffs rather than our community working together to solve the issue. If this pattern of over-politicizing continues, we all lose.
