A Morris County family says they captured video of a person abusing their family pet while on vacation.
The Hankins, from Randolph, say they went away for Thanksgiving, so they used the app, Rover, to find someone to stay with their dog, Bella. The family says it has used the app dozens of times before but never for overnight dog sitting.
The family says the sitter was abusive to Bella. At one point, they say home video captured the sitter smacking and screaming at the dog. They say Bella is now showing signs of trauma.
"Normally, one of the boys goes and opens up the front door and she comes bolting out, and she's on her back and just happy to see us and everything," says Steven Hankin. "But she was still in the house."
The family says the sitter also stole cash and a purse. Home video has been turned over to police.
Rover says it is investigating the case but that all of its sitters go through background checks.
