A memorial continues to grow outside the Echo Place family shelter in Mount Hope where two children were found stabbed to death, leaving neighbors stunned and grief stricken.

“I’m very sorry because I got a little grandson you know, but it’s a shame, everybody feel[s] very bad about it,” said Sylvia Thurman.

Dimone Fleming remained under psychiatric evaluation Monday, two days after police say she killed her sons, Dashawn Fleming, 3, and Octavius Fleming-Canada who was just 11 months old.

Police say officers found Fleming acting erratically and burning items in the kitchen of her apartment after a 9-1-1 call on Saturday.

The officers removed the 22-year-old mother from the home and rushed her to the hospital, seemingly without realizing that the boys were in the home, mortally wounded.

Then, they received a second 9-1-1 call. Police returned to find the boys with stab wounds to the neck and chest.

“We were in the apartment right above her. If those fires or flames would have been engulfed, we would have been right with it,” Stefanie Romero said.

Neighbors in the building like Romero are having a hard time understanding how a mother could hurt her own children. She hopes for more support for moms struggling with mental health.

“I’m not giving the woman an excuse but it’s a thing, a real thing, when you have little kiddies and you’re suffocated and you’re drowned and you’re a single parent, especially in the shelter. It’s a lot,” she said.

Fleming is now facing a number of charges, including two counts of murder.
