Dozens of families in Marshalltown spent the end of the Thanksgiving weekend scrambling to find a new day care, after Little Scholars Learning Center closed suddenly.
Parents received a notice Saturday morning that "Little Scholars is now closed for business."
The notice from the owner apologized for the hardship but said she was getting treatment for mental health issues.
The abrupt closure meant more than 60 families had to return from the holiday break and look for childcare at a time when places are already difficult to find.
"I was in shock. I couldn't believe it," said Nikki Adair, whose son attended the day care. "And I'm like, 'Oh my gosh, all of these families, all these staff members.' This is horrible."
Staff at Little Scholars said they found out about the closure at the same time as the families.
"It really hurts a lot of us," teacher Shelton Coleman teacher. "There's 29 staff and there's 60 plus families who have been with us for years who are out of childcare now and us out of a job."
But both staff and parents expressed sympathy and love for the owner, even if the timing was difficult.
"I love our owner," Coleman said. "So this makes me really sad."
