SAN JOSE (KCBS RADIO) – Just weeks after the last election wrapped up in San Jose, a new political fight is brewing in the city.

The current city council members will need to choose how to fill the vacancies – by either holding new elections or simply appointing replacements.

Mayor-elect Matt Mahan has come out strongly in favor of the option of the special election.

"We've just been through a contentious mayoral campaign," said Mahan. "Now is the time to unite around our shared principles."

"No principle is more crucial to San Jose than the foundational value that the people should choose their leaders – not the politician," he said.

In the meantime, a number of concerned residents have formed a group to advocate for special elections as well.

But opponents have said that such elections would be too time-consuming and expensive, with costs estimated to run in excess of a million dollars.
