With Cyber Monday in full swing and items set to arrive on many doorsteps, Edison police are warning shoppers that package thefts are very high this time of year.
Edison Police Deputy Chief Robert Dudash says package theft is a year-round problem, but there are ways to protect your goods.
"Leaving front porch lights on especially now with the clocks recently changing and getting dark earlier, the more light the better" says Dudash.
According to experts at security.org, more than 18% of New Jersey residents surveyed before the holiday season last year reported at least one package getting stolen. Experts say a Ring camera can be a great deterrent.
Many retailers, like Amazon, also offer lockers where shoppers can pick up their items. Some sellers also allow people to pick their delivery day and offer ways to track the items.
In New Jersey, a new law increases penalties for those convicted of package theft. They can also face up to five years in jail.
