Dovie Necretia Scoggins Lane was born on April 10, 1929, to George and Annie Scoggins in Achille, Ok. She passed from this life on November 27, 2022 at the age of 93.
After graduating from Achille High School in 1947, Dovie moved to California to find work. She lived in boarding houses with her sisters, Ruby and Opal, and best friend, Penny. Her high school sweetheart, Jim Lane, was serving in the US Army in Japan during WWII. After he came home, they were married in Walnut Creek, Calif., and soon moved back to Oklahoma to be near family.
Dovie worked as a switchboard operator for Bell Telephone Co., and transferred to Dallas, Texas. They lived in the Dallas area for the next 40 years, raising their three children in Grand Prairie, Texas. They were faithful members of Calvary Baptist Church in GP and loved their pastor and church family. Jim served as a deacon and usher. Dovie served as a Sunday School teacher and secretary. She was active in PTA and was a room mother for her children’s classes. She was fluent in shorthand, and was the bookkeeper for their household, always balancing her checkbook by hand.
In grade school, she won the spelling bee and she enjoyed working crossword puzzles. She loved music, especially the smooth love songs of Jim Reeves and other famous artists. Gospel hymns were also her favorite and she read her Bible everyday. Dovie was an excellent seamstress and homemaker. Her pies were always requested at family gatherings. She loved family vacations, church bus trips, and camping in Colorado.
Although shy, Dovie loved fellowshipping with anyone! She would love to share her life’s story and love to hear all about yours. She enjoyed pets and would treat them with a special gentleness and kindness.
Upon retirement, Dovie and Jim returned to Oklahoma and attended church in Durant for the next 30 years. They celebrated over 71 years of marriage. After her husband’s death, she moved to the Kansas City area to live with her daughter as caregiver. Dovie was able to stay at home, surrounded by loved ones until her peaceful passing on a Sunday morning. She is now surrounded by her loved ones in heaven, especially, her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings Coy Scoggins (infant), Ruby Scoggins Suter, Troy Scoggins, Opal Scoggins Creech; her beloved husband “Jim” James L. Lane; son, James Michael Lane and grandson, Cody Wheeler.
Dovie is survived by her brother, Wayne Scoggins and his wife, Bonnie, of Norman, Okla.; two children, Karen Lane Wheeler (Terry Cole) of Durant, Okla., and Donna Lane Talley (Willis Talley) of Kansas City, Mo.; seven grandchildren, who were the light of her life: Kristy, Brandon, Matt, Cody, Chad, Ashley, and Kristen; 18 great grandchildren living and several great-grand babies in heaven that she is just now getting to know. Dovie has many nieces and nephews and other family members that she loved dearly.
She is also survived by her best friend of 90 years, Penny Perkins, of Hurst, Texas. Also dear to her, were Jim’s parents and his siblings including surviving sisters, Florine Draper, Glenda Nicholson, Barbara Payne and Paula Lane. She was blessed with many friends and neighbors, each holding a special place in her heart.
A memorial service in her honor will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022, at the Holmes~Coffey~Murray Funeral Home.
