DNC passes new primary calendar making S.C. first and booting Iowa
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) officially passed their new early primary calendar on Saturday, which drastically shakes up the order of states to first cast votes in the presidential nomination process. The plan, which was supported by President Joe Biden, makes South Carolina the first state on the presidential primary calendar on Feb. 3, 2024, followed by New Hampshire and Nevada three days later. The proposal would also move battleground states Georgia and Michigan up in the calendar.Iowa, whose caucus has kicked off the process for Democrats since 1972, is now out of the early window according to the DNC. CBS News poll: Most Americans think changes to policing are necessary
Amid renewed discussion of police procedures, large bipartisan majorities believe at least some changes are necessary. Partisans do differ on the extent of change needed and the urgency of police reform generally: Democrats say major changes are needed; Republicans say minor ones would suffice. Democrats consider police reform a high priority; Republicans, less so. As has long been the case, race shapes people's views of both how their local police make them personally feel and how they perceive the way police treat White people and Black people. People's feelings about police in their own community are related to their views on the...
Cruz: Biden "telegraphed weakness" with response to Chinese spy balloon
Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas commended President Biden on Sunday for ordering the destruction of a suspected Chinese spy balloon over the Atlantic Ocean but faulted him for waiting several days to take action, saying the president's handling of the incident "projected weakness" to Beijing.Fighter jets shot the balloon out of the sky off the coast of South Carolina on Saturday on the president's orders, one week after it was first detected over Alaska, U.S. officials said. Appearing on "Face the Nation" on Sunday, Cruz suggested that swifter and more decisive action would have sent a stronger message to Chinese...

New Hampshire battles to retain first-in-the-nation presidential primary
For more than 100 years, New Hampshire has hosted the first primary in the nation on the road to the presidential nomination. But some Democrats want to change that, arguing that New Hampshire is too small, too rural and not diverse or reflective enough of a changing country despite the state hosting the first primary since 1920 due to a state law. This weekend, the Democratic National Committee meets in Philadelphia to discuss making some changes to their presidential nominating calendar. Under the proposed plan, which is being supported by President Joe Biden, South Carolina would become the first state on the...
