Woman killed while trying to cross the street near central Pa. Dollar General Store

Officials on Monday identified a woman killed while trying to cross a street in Lancaster County less than 500 feet from her home as Brenda Lausch, of Akron, Pa.

The crash occurred about 5:16 p.m. Saturday in the southbound lane of 500 block of South 7th Street in West Earl Township near a Dollar General store.

The store is on the west side of the street where Lausch, 56, was trying to cross the two-lane road. She lived at a mobile home park across the street. There are no sidewalks or crosswalks at the scene, police said, but there are shoulders on both sides.

Lausch was struck after the sun had set by a southbound Chevrolet Suburban driven by a 57-year-old man.

The driver, who was not injured, stopped at the scene, police said. His name was not released.

An autopsy determined Lausch died from multiple traumatic injuries. Her manner of death was accidental, according to the coroner.

A friend posted on Facebook that Lausch was “a beautiful soul with a sweet and loving heart,” who often made homemade crafts for friends and family. Her friend showed photos of Christmas ornaments on her tree that Lausch had given her.

Police said they are still investigating the circumstances of the crash and whether the driver would be cited. They are continuing to talk to witnesses, take measurements and photos and look at evidence, investigators said.

Anyone with information about the crash may contact Officer Justin Cruce at 717-859-1411 or by email at jcruce@westearlpd.org.
