Pittsburgh launches 2022-23 Snow Angels snow-removal program

The city is searching for volunteers in several neighborhoods ahead of winter.

In a news release Monday, the city of Pittsburgh announced this season's launch of the Snow Angels program, which sees community volunteers shoveling and salting sidewalks for seniors and residents with disabilities. “I am excited to announce that the City’s Snow Angels program is returning for the 2022-2023 winter season,” Mayor Ed Gainey said in the release. “This program provides a vital service for our neighbors in need and ensures that our sidewalks stay safe for everyone during and after winter weather events. "I am thankful for the youth groups and sports teams that have already answered the call to become snow angels and I encourage everyone who can to join us by going to pittsburghpa.gov/snowangels or calling 311.” In the release, the city said that the number of residents in need of these winter clean-up services "far surpasses the number of volunteers who sign up in many areas of the city." Pittsburgh is looking to add volunteers in the following neighborhoods: Beechview Brighton Heights Brookline Carrick East Liberty Elliott Greenfield Hill District Homewood Manchester Marshall-Shadeland Mount Washington Perry South Sheraden Stanton Heights The city said that clean sidewalks also help the postal carriers, firefighters and police officers in the community.Southwest Pennsylvania has already seen snowfall this month, with Pittsburgh's Action Weather predicting the area to see an additional half-foot of snow above normal this winter. Neighbors seeking services and volunteers can also register for the program by calling 311. Residents can contact the Snow Angels program directly at 412-255-0846 or snowangels@pittsburghpa.gov.
