US man convicted of aiding Islamic State as sniper, trainer
NEW YORK (AP) — A former New York stockbroker-turned-Islamic State group militant has been convicted of becoming a sniper and trainer for the extremist group during its brutal reign in Syria and Iraq. A Brooklyn federal court jury reached a verdict Tuesday in the trial of Ruslan Maratovich Asainov, a Kazakh-born U.S. citizen. Prosecutors say he fought in numerous battles and built a notable profile in the Islamic State group by becoming a sniper and later an instructor of nearly 100 other long-range shooters. Defense lawyers argued that his accounts of his role were boasts that had no firsthand corroboration and didn’t prove anyone died because of his conduct.

Mexico blames anesthesiologist for 35 meningitis deaths
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican authorities have arrested an anesthesiologist they blame for an outbreak of meningitis that has killed 35 patients and sickened 79. The chief prosecutor in the northern state of Durango alleges the anesthesiologist used contaminated morphine. Prosecutor Sonia de la Garza said Tuesday that the doctor used “improper procedures” in administering spinal blocks, mainly to pregnant women. The doctor’s name was not released. Prosecutors say he apparently carried his own morphine from one private hospital to another, spreading a fungal infection that contaminated the medication at the first clinic. The state health inspector and an employee of his agency have been arrested on charges of failing to provide adequate oversight.

Court denies aid for Hiroshima A-bomb survivors’ children
TOKYO (AP) — A Japanese court has rejected a damage suit filed by a group of children of Hiroshima atomic bombing survivors seeking government support for medical costs, saying the hereditary impact of radiation exposure is still unknown. A group of 28 plaintiffs whose parents suffered radiation exposure in the Aug. 6, 1945, U.S. atomic attack were demanding the central government include them in the medical support available to survivors. The Hiroshima District Court said the possibility of a hereditary effect from radiation cannot be denied, but there is no established scientific consensus and the government’s exclusion of the plaintiffs from medical support is not unconstitutional.

States push to enshrine protections for tribal children
HELENA, Mont. (AP) — A handful of U.S. states are considering legislation this year to include provisions of the Indian Child Welfare Act in state law. Supporters say it’s urgent as they await a U.S. Supreme Court challenge to the federal law. The act requires states to notify tribes when Native American children are removed from families due to abuse or neglect allegations. It says such children must be placed with extended family, members of their tribe or other Native American families whenever possible. Lawmakers in Montana, Wyoming, Utah and North Dakota are considering bills this year. Ten other states have similar laws. New Mexico’s took effect this year.
