Vote for Marion County HS Athlete of the Week: Boys, Girls basketball stars and a running back shine

Allen Pettigrew Jr.
Ocala Star-Banner

Marion County sports had a fantastic Thanksgiving break. This time of the year is home to some of the best stages in high school basketball and no turkey day is complete without football.

Our five nominees come from the court and the field. We have four basketball players who led their teams to early season wins. Our single football player continued a rare streak and touchdown record in the regional title game.

You can vote once per hour. Please share the poll on social media so friends and family can get in on the action. Voting will close Thursday at 11:59 p.m.

Here are the nominees:

Tatiana Matthews, SG, Dunnellon

Stats: 35 PPG, 6 RPG, 3 APG, 1.5 BPG, 4.5 SPG, 1.5 TPG

Matthews continues her offensive tear, scoring 70 points through two games. She already has two games with over 40 points and a season low of 28.

Jordan Gimenez, SG, Lake Weir

Stats: 22 PPG, 47% from 3-point range

Gimenez is scoring a county-high 22 points per game on ridiculous efficiency. The Lake Weir senior is one made free throw away from starting the season shooting an elusive 50% from the field, 40% from three, and 90% from the free-throw line.

X'zavion McCoy, PG, Forest

Stats: 15.7 PPG, 8 APG, 5.7 RPG, 1.3 SPG

McCoy shows complete control of the game on the court. Next-level playmaking skills made him the engine of an undefeated team.

Beau Beard, RB, Trinity Catholic

Stats: 121 rushing yards, 2 TDs in regional title game

Beard did his damage in two quarters. This marks the senior running back's third 100-plus yards game in a row.

Taleah Jones, G, Forest

Stats: 16 PPG, 7 APG, 5 RPG

Jones took a step up in the Wildcats' offense during Thanksgiving week. Her skills on the court earned her one of the best stat lines of the week.
