Employees at Amazon's Joliet warehouse conduct walkout on Cyber Monday

JOLIET (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Amazon warehouse in Joliet serves as a central hub for products coming in from around the world; a facility that’s essential during the busy holiday shopping season.

But, for the second time in two months, warehouse employees staged a walkout.

Workers said if the space were to shut down on Cyber Monday, Amazon could lose millions of dollars per minute.

“None of this could happen without these workers,” Marcos Ceniceros, Executive Director of Warehouse Workers for Justice, told CBS- 2. “We’re looking for pay equity, to address health and safety issues in the warehouse, and they want to be treated with dignity as workers.”

Last month, warehouse workers walked out on Amazon Prime Day with the same message.

Nearly 700 workers at the Joliet facility have signed a petition outlining their demands which includes a base pay rate of $25 per hour.

“Despite a small demonstration initiated by outside groups, the overwhelming majority of our team members at our facility in Joliet, IL continued to do what they do every day, deliver for our customers. While we’re always listening and looking at ways to improve, we remain proud of the competitive pay, comprehensive benefits, and safe work experience we provide,” Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said when asked by WBBM for a comment on Monday’s walkout.
