Semi driver dies after veering off roadway, crashing into trees in Southwest Michigan

(WWJ) Michigan State Police troopers are investigating a fatal, single-vehicle semi crash in Southwest Michigan over the weekend.

According to investigators with the MSP Wayland Post, the crash happened just before 10 a.m. Saturday along southbound I-196, near mile marker 39, in Allegan County's Saugatuck Twp.

Releasing a photo of the wreck, MSP said a preliminary investigation found that the driver of a semi-tractor veered off the roadway on a curve, and crashed into several trees.

The truck driver, identified as a 51-year-old Kentwood man, had to be extricated from vehicle.

He later died of this injuries.

A passenger in the semi suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

MSP noted that both the driver and the passenger were wearing their seatbelts.

While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, police said that alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to have been a factor.

MSP was assisted by Allegan County Sheriff’s deputies and Saugatuck Fire at the scene.
